Pure Love

He is two or so years her elder
They are trudging behind their mother on the streets
It is a Sunday, their family’s day out
They have eaten fast foods washed down with Fanta orange
Deep fried chicken and equally done chips
Evidenced by the sister’s halfly wiped lips
Her steps are tiny
She can’t have been walking for too long
The brother is holding her hand, tightly
He is guiding her movements
There is love there.

A few years later, many many years
Both their parents have passed away
The mourning period doesn’t last very long
The brother is on the sister’s throat
Threats, fights, a string of court cases
I’m the man and I should have that piece of land!
No, daddy said I am to take over that acre…
The situation is bad
Worse than the fights for remote keeper and TV time allocation
Love turned to venomous hate
Or is it greed?

A young man is getting his affairs in order
The girl he has been dating for three and a half years now
Is the one
He can feel it with every fibre of his being, he knows it
The ring he ordered is ready for pick up
He will surprise her, no calls, no crowds
It is a very special, defining moment in his life
He lets himself in, starts looking around for his future wife
On the bed he sees her, their eyes meet
But she is not alone
They are both stark naked
Is that her father, uncle or grandfather?
He doesn’t need to know
Where is the love?

It is a chilly morning
A little girl is perched on her mother’s back
She is wearing her new uniform
Black shiny shoes, a red jacket to match her school sweater
It is her first day, excitement is all she knows
After the drop off, mother changes from flats to heels
Rushes to work, she is the provider.

The girl is now a woman
She is suffering from a terminal illness
She has lost friends, job, fiancé, everything
Her father had popped in her life
When she was rising in corporate circles
Not anymore
One person has been by her side all along
Overdoing it all to keep her strong
Pointing at rays of hope in the stormy unbearable days
The woman who carried her for nine months bringing her forth
That is the only Pure Love.
